DAY 1 – October 22, 2005:
flight and arrival (survival?)
We flew Vancouver to Amsterdam direct with KLM. We had the exit seats so were very comfortable. Bags that are checked can weigh 50 lbs. carry on bags to weigh 22 lbs.
DAY 2 – October 23, 2005
Here is a link to the Uniworld rates & pictures of the ship. River Duchesss
We arrive in Amsterdam & are met & taken to the MS River Duchess & wait for our cabin. We are upgraded two floors. The capacity of the ship is 138 & we have only 78 passengers. Pat goes to the Introduction & dinner & I sleep. We are too jet lagged to go see anything of Amsterdam. I spend some time taking pictures of the River traffic.
Day 3 – October 24, 2005
Cologne, Germany
This morning we cruise on the Rhine. Peaceful river meadows and idyllic villages appear along the river banks. We pass Duisburg, the world’s largest inland port. Here we encounter the mouth of the Ruhr River, the lifeline of Germany’s Rhur District. Cruise through fashionable Dusseldorf before arriving in Cologne, where we tour the Cathedral (550 foot spires). The ship docks near the cathedral, making it easy to enjoy a walk through the old town where you can find many good pubs and taverns for an after dinner drink. It was cold and rainy in Cologne. The Guide at the Cathedral is very interesting, but none of my pictures are very good. I do not have a tripod and its dark and needs a long exposure to get anything worthwhile. We spend our free time walking through the shopping area which is crowded with other shoppers. We finally figure out where to get some Irish whiskey and then it is time to meet the bus to go back to the ship for dinner. We dress for the Captain’s welcoming dinner this evening
