DAY 6 – October 27, 2005 - Wurzburg, Germany
We take buses to Wertheim after our walking tour of Miltenburg. We reboard the ship and have lunch. We reboard the buses right after lunch for our excursion to Wurzburg. We do not get to see any thing of Wertheim which has an old stone fortress dating back to 1100.
We have a very animated tour guide for our tour of the Prince-Bishops’s Palace (built 1720 –1744. Unesco-world heritage building. One of Europe’s greatest palaces and a beautifully laid-out “Royal” court garden. (The garden was put to bed for the winter and I did not have time to take photos.. sigh) Inside the Residence the world’s largest ceiling painting by the Venetian Tiepolo. We were not allowed pictures inside, only in the chapel. This palace is extremely opulent and was built to imitate Versailles.
Day 6 – October 27, 2005 – Wurzburg, Germany
Wurzburg’s history began about 1000 B.C. as a Celtic shelter on the left bank of the Main river on a hill known as Marienberg. Later, in 650 A.D. the Franconian Duchy was established and a small settlement grew on the right bank of the Main. This settlement became the city now known as Wurzburg. In 689 the City was christianized by three Irish monks, Kilian, Totnan and Kolonat and only a couple of centuries later, the Diocese of Wurzburg was founded. Today it’s a modern city. 90% of the city was destroyed during World War II, but a great deal of the buildings have been beautifully restored. We enjoy a glorious sunset on the trip back to the ship. We reboard the ship at 6:30 – very long busy day. Dinner and Medieval entertainment in the lounge. The ship arrives at Karlstadt.
