Steps 17 to 20 - Moss
The last photo, taken in June, 2020 shows the waterfall with all the moss gone. Two of the photos were taken in April of 2019 when I was doing a renovation of the pond edges. One of the photos is from April, 2018. In 2018 the pond was more shaded and the rocks had not been dumped into the pond, so the moss was growing very nicely. The photos show the two relatively new little willows, each growing in a corner of the pond on the side that borders the boxwood and yew hedges. The Mermaid now sits just back of one of the willows by the bottom of the waterfall. One of the photos shows the Lebanon cedar growing over another corner of the pond. This is one of the original plants. It has spread to hang over the pond. I keep it trimmed to a size and shape to suit its location. Around this part of the pond is where the old plum tree was taken down, leaving a stump, that is now decaying and may be suitable for a planter for something that likes a woodsy soil. The Japanese lantern has been moved to this area. Since the pond is no longer shaded by the plum tree, the lantern seems to be losing its moss, too. The cement blocks were removed in the renovation and there is now, just the stone path along that side of the pond. I am starting to grow other plants along this side of the pond, including a globe flower, that I have put into the pond in a pot. I think I will have to move this plant out of the pond, though, as it does not want so much water. I have the same plant growing in a pot on the deck that I try to keep watered regularly and it does very well with that kind of growing care. The water lilies that were planted originally, of course, were not getting enough sun. The water hawthorne does wonderfully well. It seems to have spread into the water lily pots and puts on a show almost all year. Beside the waterfall is another plant from the original plantings that is doing very well. The marsh marigold puts on a great show in April and then spreads over the edging with lovely shiny green leaves when the blooms fade. It is in a pot on the ledge of that side of the pond. The water irises have spread nicely around the pond.
