March 9, 2001. Rhodes. Breakfast and finished doing our 30 postcards to relatives and friends (those who sent us Xmas cards). Then walked to the old town of Rhodes and found the archelogical museum. Pottery from 600 B.C. Gravestones of the Knights of St.John - 1500 and prior, whereafter Suileman the Magnificant added Rhodes to his Empire. It was quite a fight as the walls of Rhodes encircle the northern end of the island with outposts and Lindos (which we did not see, now Kamilos) Lindos is a town on the Greek island of Rhodes. It’s known for its clifftop acropolis, which features monumental 4th-century gates and reliefs from about 280 B.C. The Temple of Athena Lindia sits above an earlier temple. On the site’s lower level is the 14th-century Castle of the Knights of St. John. Among the town’s whitewashed buildings, the Virgin Mary of Lindos Church has 15th-century frescoes. Lunch on our way back to our 'Grand Hotel' was pizza- cold and beer, also cold. Good thing the temps are 20°+. The Aegean Sea was glorious with motion and colours. CNN has Kosovo bad news and .com stocks falling like rocks. In the ruins there are prior temples to Athena, Dionysus, Aphrodite and Artemis (seem to be the same person, Pat says). People here smoke like we used to with meals and everywhere. The air polution is bad and giving me eye trouble. Rhodes holds more modern beaches, nite clubs, etc. for the rich of the Meditereanean to get away to.
