Page 12: DAY 10: Regensburg, Germany – October 31, 2005
We reboard the ship at Regensburg, have lunch and at 2:00 p.m depart for a walking tour of Regensburg. We have an excellent guide. I could have listened to him for hours more, but it was beginning to get dark and I had to find a drugstore, as well as find my own way back. My notorious sense of direction got me lost and confidentally striding off in exactly the opposite direction I should have been going. Stopped to ask directions and finally got turned around in time to catch a bit of light on the Stone bridge on the way back, using my 35mm camera. (Note: I cannot find these 35mm photos. I may not have scanned them into my computer).
Regensburg is a beautiful city that lies on the banks of the Danube (Donau) River. Founded in 179 AD, the city has enjoyed a long and varied history. Originally a Roman garrison, Regensburg still retains many of its original structures (Regensburg survived World War II mostly intact due to the extensive air defenses built around the city) The Roman fort was built here in AD 179 by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius. In 843 Ludwig the German made it the capital of the east Frankish kingdom and it remained a royal city until the late 12th century. The medieval townscape is made up of numerous churches and towers belonging to the great noble families and patrician houses of the 13th and 14th century.
DAY 10 – October 31, 2005 - Regensburg, Germany
City of towers, City of dreams Believe it or not, there are 1200 historic buildings clustered together in the center of Regensburg. Particularly characteristic are the mansions build by rich patrician families who traded with cities as far away as Kiev in the east and Venice in the South. They proudly displayed their wealth to all by building great houses with towers rising high into the sky.
