Belgrade, Serbia
Belgrade is the capital of Serbia and with 1.4 million inhabitants it is the center of commerce and communication. The Celts were the first to settle it in the 4th century B.C., building a fortress on the white rocks overlooking the mouth of the rivers Sava and Danube; Belgrade means “White City”. The fort of Kelemegdan now stands on that spot, built on the Celtic foundations, but that is nearly all of Belgrade’s tumultuous past that remains. The City has been razed to the ground by invaders 36 times since its founding. The last was during World War II, so most of Belgrade was build since then in a bleak, socialist-modern style, although some sections of the 19th century Mittel European grandeur and Turkish exotica did survive.
This information we have provided by the tour company is a bit dated in that it fails to mention the bombings by the UN in 1999 which has been the most recent devastation to Belgrade. A google search seems to tell me that there are still unresolved issues in this regard.
As I type this on October 22, 2022 there are even more unresolved issues with the Russian war against Ukraine ongoing.
