Belgrade, Serbia.
Day 19, November 9, 2005
Uniworld Version: Arrive in Belgrade for a full day in this interesting city. Your morning tour highlights the city’s main attractions including Kalemegdan fortress as it looms over the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. Saint Sava cathedral, the largest Orthodox church in the world and Tito’s Memorial. The afternoon is free to explore more of this charming city on your own. Your ship leaves tonite at 10:00 p.m.
We have a lecture on Modern Serbia at 8:15 and then our city tour starts at 9:00. We have a very good guide “Dan” who fills us in on history – mostly recent. We tour and are back for lunch. Pat and I walk – up the 300+ stairs and all around. We go out to the optional dinner at 6:00 and are back at 9:30. Sail at 10:00 for Veliko Gradiste, Serbia
The fog limits my picture taking. The tour around the city on the bus showed us some of the bombed out areas, with newly built contrasting with the wreckage. Its like catching the city with its pants half down. The Israel and American Embassies had armed guards at their gates and we were not to take pictures – security matter, I suppose. There is a lot of energy in the city, it seemed to me. They will probably have their economy booming in no time. The entertainment was music and local folk dances, with lovely costumes. Pat was sitting right next to the performing area and was close to being part of the dance at times.
Belgrade Fortress is the historical nucleus of Belgrade, around which the civilian settlement grew up, starting from the time of Singidunum in the Celtic and Roman periods. Numberous remains of the Roman fortification have been uncovered while the IV Flavian legion was stationed here, the first fort constructed of square hewn stones was erected in what is now called the Upper Fortress Gornji Grad.
Today the Fortress is a specific museum of Belgrade history. The compound comprises the Belgrade Fortress (which includes the Upper Town and the Lower Town) as well as the Kalemegdan Park.
