DAY 10: Regensburg, Germany – October 31, 2005
St. Peter’s Cathedral is indisputably the city’s spiritual center When you look up towards the spires of this imposing Gothic building, you will see kings on horseback, foolish vergins, and gargoyles with animal and human faces. Historic Sausage Kitchen next to the Old Stone Bridge is a small building that is at least 500 years old, is a traditional meeting place for those who enjoy eating little grilled sausages and sauerkraut. Next to it stands the impressive seven-story Salt Store with its steep roof. It was built in 1620 as the city’s biggest salt store and was restored at a cost of several million marks in 1986 – 1989. Regensburg held the monopoly for trading in salt. And salt was regarded as “white gold”.
Did you know…That every 3 Series BMW rolls off the assembly line in Regensburg? …That the microchip in your mobile phone very probably comes from Infineon’s Regensburg factory? …That the world’s oldest music academy is situated in Regensburg and was recently given university status? …that currently more than 20,000 students are acquiring first-class qualifications at Regensburg’s three higher education institutions (University, University of Applied Sciences, College of Church Music)?. There is much, much more to the history and historic buildings, as well as modern living. Regensburg has a high quality of life. I could spend more time here!
