Kalocsa, Hungary
Day 17, November 7, 2005
Uniworld version: Arrive this morning in charming Kalocsa, renowned for paprika production. Your tour of the Putsza district will include the town and a specatacular display of horsemanship by the local “cowboys”. Depart this afternoon for a relaxing cruise down the beautiful Danube. This afternoon you will visit and tour the ancient city of Pecs, first founded by the Romans, location of Hungary’s first university and center of Turkish culture during the Ottoman occupation. Tonight there will be local entertainment of music, dance and traditional crafts.
My version: 8:30 City tour including Archbishop’s palace, paprika museum, a LIBRARY with old documents,(no photos of course – what a wonderful treasure), we listened to an organ concert in the church, then to the horsemanship display. One of the features was the guy playing a horn type instrument like a large clarinet. In the afternoon, we took the bus to the City of Pecs. Pat and I did not go on the walking tour, but walked by ourselves in the downtown area. Pat has a nasty cold and is tired of these gatherings of many people in small rooms.
On the way back we drive through the countryside and our guide gives us the history of the coutry and the area, which is largely agricultural and some wineries. The people who had their land taken from them were given their lands back after the collapse of the Soviets in 1990. They are slowly reviving but are still very poor and have to develop their industries. There seems to be a lot of autos (Peugot, VW, etc), established world known companies (Canon, etc) and other technology. There is a lot of advertising. They use ‘florients’ as their monetary unit, and are looking foreward to joining the EU in 2010.
May to October, 2022 - Putin's war still goes on. Ukraine has regained some of their lost territory
Very long day. There is local entertainment in the lounge but I am asleep immediately after dinner – 9:30, I think. From all reports the entertainment was excellent.
