DAY 8 – Bamberg, Germany - October 29, 2005
Enter the Main-Danube Canal at Bamberg, one of Germany’s most beautiful cities. Disembark and enjoy a guided tour of this medieval gem, with its uniquely intact townscape and which boasts over 1000 years of history. See the Cathedral, the Old Town Hall, and the cities serpentine streets with charming houses and 18th Century mansions. Bamberg is listed as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Then drive through the picturesque countryside to Forchheim where you re-board the ship. Continue along the Main-Danube Canal, arriving later this evening in Nuremberg.
The old Frankish inperial and Episcopal city, the most important town in the Uipper Franconia, lies on the western edge of a wide basin in the valley of the River Regnitz, here divided into to arms, which flows into the Main River 4 miles downstream.
The town has a river port on the Main-Danube Canal; its industrial zone (principally engineering, textiles and electrical goods) is East of the Town. It has numerous breweries; a local specialty is Rauchbier, brewed from smoked malt.
The old town hall is also known as the island or bridge town hall, since it was built on an artifical island in the river Regnitz and is connected to the banks by 2 bridges each side. The old town hall was mentioned already in 1386, the present building was constructed in 1461 after a city fire in 1460.
St. Peters Cathedral - 13th century. The spires were only added in the 19th century. The finest Gothic building in Bavaria. The inside of the Cathedral houses its greatest treasures: beautiful stained glass windows, cloisters, statues and a high silver and copper alter. The Cathedral has a famous Boy’s Choir, the Domspatzen (Cathedral Sparrows). Pat and I are both not feeling that terrific. There seems to be a bug of some kind going around the ship, infecting everyone.
