DAY 11 – November 1, 2005 – Rhine – Main – Danube – Waterway continued
From Mainz (where the Main River enters the Rhine River) until the German/Austrian border there are 56 locks. Between Nurnberg and the summit near Hilpoltstein, on a length of 27 km (17 miles), the Canal must climb up 93.5 meters (107 feet) which can be done by one lock which pumps up to 19.5 meters (64 feet)and three other locks which each lifts up 25 meters (82 feet). These structures rank among the highest shaft locks with water saving ponds. The descent to the Danube consists of 3 locks with a lift of 17 meters (56 feet) each. The Canal-cross-section has a water line width of 55 meters (180 feet) and a channel 40 meters (131) feet wide and 4 meters (13 feet) deep. The locks have a useful length of 190 meters (623 feet) and a width of 12 meters (40 feet).
DAY 11 – November 1, 2005 - Schaerding and the Valley of the River Inn (optional excursion)
You will begin by visiting the Mariahilfer Monastery located above Passau where you will have time to enjoy the panoramic view of the town below. Continuing on to Austria through the River Inn Valley, your tour will pass through Wernstein before arriving at the quaint, traditional Austrian village of Schaerding. Here you will have time to explore the beautiful town on your own. On your return to Passau the tour will take you along the Bavarian side of the River making stops along the way so you can take in the stunning views. It was a cold, foggy and grey day so the bus did not stop for the photo opportunities. My photos in the Monastery were not good enough to be included.
