DAY 7 – October 28, 2005 - Rothenburg, Germany
Rothenburg excursion is an extra that we do not take. We spend the day cruising and writing a few post cards. I am reading a book called ‘Brimstone’ (from the library of donated books) – have finished ‘Digital Fortress’. Early this morning the ship will depart Karlstad. Enjoy a full day of cruising through the sunny valleys of the meandering Main. Pass picturesque towns with a late evening arrival in Schweinfurt.
October 28, 2005 - Fog and Locks
We go through 66 locks on our journey from Amsterdam to the Black Sea. The time of the ship’s arrival at each lock has to be booked a year in advance. At this point in our journey we are going up in the locks and we are going upstream. When we cross the continental divide we begin going down the steps in the locks and downstream to the Black Sea. The ship enters the lock, the gate closes and the lock fills with water. When it is full we exit at the other end of the lock, having gone up a step. The locks have different ways of opening and closing. This one opens like a gate. Others open vertically, like a door rising upwards. Its most interesting to watch.
